Competitive Kickball Tournament Brings Kickball Leagues Together

Centreville, VA - June 12, 2007

The World Kickball Association’s (WAKA) Kickball.com Open Tournament was held on Saturday, June 9 in Centreville, Virginia. Nineteen teams—consisting of nearly 300 players from five different states and four different kickball organizations—descended on Bull Run Regional Park to battle the intense heat and each other to win the cash and the distinction of being the first ever Kickball.com Open Champions.

Scores of onlookers and supporters came out to witness the intense action and fierce competition of the first kickball tournament of its kind and when all the dust settled, two teams from Arlington, Virginia, battled for the crown. The Kick Asphalts—the seven time World Kickball Champions—defeated Gonzo (10-0) to earn the title, the winner’s trophy, and the $5,000 check.

The Kick Asphalts will use the prize money to travel to enter the invitational 10th annual Founder’s Cup to be held September 1 in Boston, Massachusetts. Gonzo earned the second place trophy, and Naughty Balls, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, kicked their way to the third place trophy.

“It’s always exciting when a simple game like kickball can unite people from across the country and that’s exactly what the Kickball.com Open Tournament did this year,” says Tiffany Ficklin, WAKA’s Director of Events and Public Relations. “Players not only had a great day playing kickball, but left the tournament with a couple hundred more friends.”
