3 WAKA Kickball Players Share Advice for WAKApalooza Weekend 2014

You’ve seen the WAKApalooza Weekend 2014 event schedule, reserved your spot, and booked your hotel room to join WAKA in Las Vegas from October 9th - 12th. Now, to help you plan your weekend, we caught up with 3 WAKApalooza veterans to bring you secrets for capturing the spirit of the weekend.

Lena R - Captain of Beaches Be Crazy

How many times have you attended WAKApalooza Weekend?

This will be my fourth WAKAPalooza!

What is your favorite memory or part of the weekend?

Playing kickball with my favorite people!  We've got players from around the country who come out to play and it's great to catch up and have a ball on the field.  I also love the Friday pool party....it's not to be missed!

What do you do when you aren't playing kickball?

I'm lucky enough to have two awesome jobs!  I run the WAKA league in Fullerton, CA and it's awesome!  I also work in travel so I get to wander around the country looking for great places for travelers to spend the night.  I also love mud-runs....I ran over 5 races last year, one of them being the Tough Mudder.

What one piece of advice would you give new WAKApalooza attendees?

Get ready for the time of your life!  When else can you hang out with players from all over?  Don't miss the pool party.....seriously guys!

Joe H - Sofa King Good

How many times have you attended WAKApalooza Weekend?

This will be my fourth trip to WAKApalooza! Started with the Fun Games in 2011. Dressed up as Care Bears. Played in Founders Cup the past two years. Mom's Balls in 2012 and Sofa King Good in 2013.

What is your favorite memory or part of the weekend?

There are so many favorite memories... and most of them will stay in Vegas ;) Playing with my Mom's Balls family in 2012 was super special. Also, sparking a pick-up game of kickball with Bear Bear in the hallway of the Flamingo at 3am on tournament-eve stands out.

What do you do when you aren't playing kickball?

For work, I edit video game and movie trailers/commercials. I worked with an awesome team in LA a few WAKApalooza Weekends ago to make the "WAKA - This Is Our Game" video on YouTube. That was a fun project!

What one piece of advice would you give new WAKApalooza attendees?

If I had to only give ONE piece of advice to new WAKApalooza attendees, I would caution not to mix vodka and Vitamin Water at the end of the night. No good comes from this!

Mel M - Team Zissou

How many times have you attended WAKApalooza Weekend?

This will be year number 5!  I can't believe it!  Our Team Zissou WAKApalooza inaugural year was 2010 and it really feels like yesterday.  Time flies when you're playing outside with your best pals! :)

What is your favorite memory from WAKApalooza?

Fuzzy as they might be, I have many favorite memories!  I'll never forget the moment we won our first Life of the Party award and sprinted onto the field trying to make the fastest pyramid possible for the photo, or the time we staged a Bad Romance flash mob and pushed our fully dressed male teammates into the pool, or the time captain Adam C made us all rally and change our flights home to Monday.  That last one was a valuable lesson.  We never fly home on Sunday anymore.  Sundays always turn out to be way too fun to miss.

My favorite part of the weekend is tournament day.  You can't beat a day of making new friends from all over the country and playing games in the park with them.  I can honestly say WAKA has brought to my life some of the very most kind, smart, funny, adventurous, fun people I've ever met.

What do you do when you aren't playing kickball?

I am a Physical Therapist at a nursing facility in Albuquerque and I absolutely love working with the elderly.  I am the proud auntie of 4 adorable little kiddos, and the mom of two mutts.  My partner in crime, Mikey, recently gave me a big 'ol rock for my left hand, so my greatest thrill right now is looking forward to a lifetime with my most favorite person.

What one piece of advice would you give new WAKApalooza attendees?

Harness the power of the rally song!  Everyone has a rally song.  When you know what that song is for each of your friends, you can help them come back to life if the long weekend starts to be too much excitement for one to handle.  Trust me-- it works like magic, and you will need to use it!  But above all, just live in the moment of having a great time and making new friends.  That's what it's all about! :)
