20 Something Finds Her Way By Playing Kickball

Elise L. moved to Albany and found her social life through playing kickball. Here's her story:

I moved to Albany in 2008.  I was 23 and working multiple jobs.  My social life was almost non-existent. I didn't know many people in the area and meeting people around my work schedule was difficult.

In 2011, a co-worker of mine asked me to play for her husband's kickball team.  I showed up that day only knowing 2 people who I had briefly met in the past.  My team was a bunch of pairs and small groups of people who had signed up together to play but did not have enough people to fill a whole team. Some people knew 1 or 2 other people, but noone knew everyone there.  It would have been easy for all of these small groups to stay divided, and for people to just hang out with the players they already knew, but that is not what happened.  We played together and we partied together. Literally dancing and singing through the entire season.  When our first season (spring 2011) was over we signed up together to play the next one, and then another one after that.

Now in our third year playing together, it seems weird that not too long ago these people were strangers.  We celebrate birthdays, personal accomplishments, and birth announcements as if we have known each other forever.  Our interests are diverse, but having fun is a top priority to all of us, and that's what makes us work.  We dress up in silly costumes and we play kickball.  We make up scavenger hunts.  We have fun.

Beyond my team I have met other active people in the albany area through kickball.  I have skied, hiked, biked, and swam with fellow kickballers. This may sound silly, but WAKA Kickball in Albany changed my life.  It made Albany a million times better for me.  They are not lying when they say "Best Parties. Best Games. Best Friends."

Did you make new friends at kickball when you moved to a new city? Tell us where you play in the comments!
