CLUBWAKA Happenings: Charity Kickball Tournament to Benefit Team Gleason

In 2012, CLUBWAKA in New Orleans teamed up with Team Gleason, an organization that helps people with neuromuscular diseases or injuries, to plan a charity kickball tournament to raise awareness toward ALS.

Steve Gleason, a former standout special teams player for the New Orleans Saints, had been diagnosed with ALS the year before, and had founded Team Gleason with the mission to show that patients can not only live but thrive after this diagnosis. Steve and the Saints are beloved in NOLA, and the tournament garnered a ton of support from the community, raising more than $20,000 in its first year. Since then, the tournament has grown every year, and has helped to raise more than $60,000 for the cause.

We’re excited to share that we just wrapped the 4th Annual CLUBWAKA Charity Kickball Tournament for Team Gleason, with a fun day of kickball games and activities in support of the cause. The event was held on November 12th, 2016 with more than a dozen teams and over two hundred players participating.

We added a fun twist to the kickball games this year, and each team had one defensive player use a bicycle in the outfield. If the player who was riding the bike around in the field caught the ball with no help, then they scored a bonus run for their team.

Overall, it was a great day of tailgating, kickball games, team challenges, a charity raffle with cool prizes from Team Gleason and the Saints, and an epic water balloon toss relay. The fundraising donations are still being counted but we’ve already collected more than $10,000 - all in support of Team Gleason and ALS awareness.
