Hi Estelle, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

My name is Estelle, Momma E or just E on the courts. I moved to Connecticut from Ohio about 8 years ago. I’ve played volleyball all my life - throughout middle school, high school, college and I also captained an adult sand volleyball team in Ohio for more than 10 years. Needless to say, I truly enjoy playing the sport.

Can you tell us about your experience as a CLUBWAKA captain?

I originally was asked to play on a team that needed girls for the session, so it was temporary. I never knew there was a league in Connecticut, so you can imagine my joy when I found out. Once that session was done, I was hooked and couldn’t stop playing. So, I called my all girls volleyball team (yes, I also play on an all-girls league) and started a CLUBWAKA volleyball team. The first few sessions consisted of mostly free agents, but hey…that’s how you meet people!

Being captain is fun. Sure, it has challenges like when you’ve built so many wonderful friendships that you don’t have room on your team to add more players… but that’s a good time to start another team and add another night of games to your schedule! I don’t just enjoy being a captain, I enjoy playing with all these amazing people. Especially when you play with wonderful people and become friends with other CLUBWAKA players and captains. You look forward to it and seeing everyone.

What do you think is the most important thing that people know about being a team captain or playing on a volleyball team?

Being a team player and trust in the team. When you see one of your players getting down on themselves (we all have bad days) encourage them. It happens…we are here for fun and building friendships and memories. Shake it off….you got this!

Describe your team(s) - what do you like most about them?

Oh, I love my teams. When work is over and I KNOW I get to see the most amazing people (not just my team, but also CLUBWAKA players and friends) it’s the greatest feeling. I walk in and see everyone and all the stress from work melts away and the laughter and fun memories begin. My teammates are not just my teammates…they have become my family.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Connecticut?

CLUBWAKA Volleyball! I have made SO many new friends who have become my family since I moved here and joined the league. It’s such a wonderful way to meet the most amazing people and have them in your life.

What's one tip you would give to someone visiting Hartford for the first time?

Come watch a game! Come join a league! Come have some FUN!

What’s coming up for you this year that you are excited about?

More Volleyball! I have two nights in the sand followed by my mud volleyball team. We LOVEEEE indoor, but what adult doesn’t like to have their feet in the sand and play in the dirt and it be acceptable? LOL….Me joining CLUBWAKA years ago, was the best thing that could have happened to me and my teams. We are truly happy to be a part of it. Everyone should.
