Spreading WAKA Kickball Love in Haiti

Some of our fellow WAKA Kickballers in partnership with the Ridgewood YMCA in New Jersey and the YMCA d'Haiti, set out to share our favorite American playground sport with the children of Haiti during a soccer camp this summer.

Each year, the camp coordinators travel to Haiti for a week of soccer training and games along with providing three meals per day. The goal of this camp, now in its ninth year, is to harness the enthusiasm the children share for soccer and use it to teach them core values such as responsibility, teamwork, honesty, respect and caring.

When our WAKA family from the YMCA asked us to help by donating shirts and equipment, we jumped at the chance to contribute to this amazing cause. Spreading smiles through kickball is our ultimate goal, so why not spread smiles all the way to Haiti?

"Initially it was difficult to teach due to the language barrier but once we demonstrated both offense and defense a few times, the campers seemed to catch on," said WAKA Kickball Representative, Isabel Castillejo. "They were able to 'thread the needle' to place a ball between two outfielders in just the right spot as well as perfected the art of bunting down the third base line. I was so thrilled to be able to share this with them."
