WAKApalooza Weekend 2014 Highlights

Going in, this year’s WAKApalooza Weekend was the most buzzed about ever with 3,000 kickball lovers headed to Las Vegas. Even with the huge expectations, it not only lived up to the hype, it exceeded it. Across four days, the biggest single kickball event ever, and 7 different WAKA parties, WAKApalooza attendees were treated to an incredible variety of events at venues all over the Las Vegas strip. Overall, it was an amazing event with kickball teams from 22 different states represented, but here are 10 of our highlights:

1. Shockwave wins the Founders Cup World Kickball Championship XVII

Though it was their first Founders Cup appearance, Shockwave, the #4 seed Regional Tournament qualifier from Maryland defeated the #2 seed, OSC, from the DC Atlantic League in the World Kickball Championship finals with a score of 2-1. This match up was a rematch game from the WAKA MidAtlantic Regional Tournament last spring and it was amazing to see this young, fast team dominate the 39 other teams in the Founders Cup competition to take the cup back to Maryland.

2. Slip n Flip

22 different WAKApalooza Weekend teams competed in the first ever Slip n Flip on the sidelines at the kickball fields. The single elimination competition included a trip down a 100 foot slip and slide and a head-to-head round of flip cup. The Shotgunnerz from Las Vegas came out on top and won the event!

3. Beaches Be Crazy wins Life of the Party Award

Put plainly, Beaches Be Crazy from Southern California might have had more fun at this WAKApalooza Weekend than anyone else. Not only did this team make homemade kickball pinatas for their opponents, hand out flamingo beer floaty toys from a cabana at the Flamingo pool party, sing the National Anthem at the Founders Cup, but they also won the highly coveted “Life of the Party” award as voted by WAKA staff and Party Patrol.

4. The WAKApalooza Weekend Kick Off Party at Chateau Nightclub

Talk about a sexy party! WAKA players danced at Chateau’s rooftop club under the Eiffel Tower and Dj Knowledj, known for his work with Beyonce and Jay-Z, was on hand to keep the party going into the wee hours of the morning. It’s no surprise that many Fun Games teams had a hard time making it to their games (even at 2:30 pm) the next day!

5. The Fun Games “Sexy and You Know It” Costume Cat Walk

As the WAKApalooza Fun Games have evolved over the past few years, the Costume Cat Walk has earned status as one of the best parts of the weekend. With theatrical team themes, props, giveaways, and even a team Pirate Ship at the fields, the amazing energy of the Costume Cat Walk was the perfect way to bring attendees together and kick off the Fun Games at the kickball field.

6. The Team Zissou Synchronized Swimming Show

Just as they’ve done at WAKApalooza Weekend the past four years, Team Zissou surprised and delighted WAKApalooza attendees with creative displays of teamwork and fun. This year, they turned the Flamingo Pool party into a synchronized swimming show complete with red bathing caps.

7. The Sunday Funday Tournament Recovery Party at Rehab

With a poolside DJ, party cabanas, and beer bucket specials at one of the most notorious pool parties in Las Vegas, its no wonder this event was a smashing success.

8. The Opening Night Party and Bar Games Tournament at Hard Rock Live

WAKApalooza Weekend 2014 began at the first ever Bar Games Tournament and Opening Night Party at Hard Rock Cafe with more than 700 people in attendance. We were excited to see so many new faces and old friends having a great time together! Congratulations to the top 3 finishers in the Bar Games Tournament:

Is Twatty a word?  - Denver, CO
Rock Paper Cannonball - Austin, TX
Beaches Be Crazy - Southern California

9. WAKApalooza Fun Games 2014 Award Winners

The teams in the Fun Games are some of the most creative folks around and we never know what to expect - that’s one of the greatest appeals of this event. Sometimes it even seems as if they don’t know where they are headed next. Through the inside jokes, the costumes, and the unexpected dance parties, the Fun Games teams manage to make the Las Vegas strip as friendly as a night at a WAKA league bar. This year, we had some fantastic Fun Games superlative prize winners - please join us in congratulating them:

Sexy and We Know It (Costume Contest)- Shotgunnerz
The WAKA Spirit- Waldo’s Rebellion
Life of the Party- Beaches Be Crazy
Get Friendly - Dude, I can Kick
Social Scene - Duke City Krackheads

10. The Party Tent at the fields and the #WAKABounceOff Contest

WAKApalooza Weekend attendees beat the heat at the fields with cold beers and Bounce-off in between their games. The #WAKABounceOff contest was a hit and players competed to show off their best trick shot! The contest is still going strong! Share or submit videos with hashtag #WAKABounceOff and you could win free seasons of WAKA Kickball & Social Sports Leagues, prize packages, and more!  More details here: http://kick.ba/lbounceoffcontest
