WAKAPalooza Weekend 2016 Guide: The Kickball Open

When it comes to WAKApalooza Weekend, there’s a kickball tournament for everyone with a love for the game.

There’s the Founders Cup World Kickball Championship for competitive players who want to compete against the best of the best. There’s the super social Fun Games for people who want to play and party with other CLUBWAKA members. And now in 2016, we’ve added The Kickball Open, an 18-team tournament that strikes the perfect balance of the WAKApalooza Weekend spirit: competition and fun.

Kirsten Agard from Portland, Oregon takes us behind the scenes as her team prepares to play in The Kickball Open, and we find out what items she considers must-haves and essentials for WAKApalooza.

Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your team— who you are, what you do, and how your team originated?

I am a CLUBWAKA Community Coordinator in Portland, Oregon and my grown-up job is in Mortgage. I have 2 kids, 4 professional degrees, am a Divemaster, and may possibly be crazy, as I always seem to add more to my plate and would hate to have any downtime in my life (apparently).

My team has played together for about 4 years. I started the team because we needed more female captains in the league, and the team filled quickly with lots of people who would do anything to get into another game and get more playing time. Our team is made up of people who love to party, will always have each others backs, and are always chasing a win (with a beer in hand). This has increased with the newest addition of traveling to play kickball with CLUBWAKA. We have had a strong core group of players who have been to every tournament in the last 2 years.

The Kickball Open is a new event at WAKApalooza Weekend. Why did you and the team choose to play in that one?

My team chose to do the Kickball Open because we have a desire to play competitive games, but not so much that we have to hold team practices like we would to hold our own in the Founders Cup. This seemed like the perfect place for this compromise.

What’s the best way to get ready for an all day kickball tournament?

I typically have a curfew for my team, depending on our start time the next day. Last year we shot for Midnight, we had 3 boys stay out until 8AM the next day with our first game at 9AM…. needless to say, this did not go well.

We always have our beer/water-run boy/girl on our sidelines (typically bribed with free drinks and lunch. I am also the team-Mom so I bring snacks. We usually shotgun a beer as a team, bright and early… Fireball can always be found on our sidelines, in our Red Bulls, and on our breath. Don’t forget sunscreen and food!

What has been your favorite part of WAKApalooza Weekend in the past?

We have met the most amazing people at all of the CLUBWAKA events- people I have invited to come visit us in Portland, and offered my house to crash in. It is always so amazing to me how many awesome people play CLUBWAKA, and how friendly, welcoming, and crazy they all are. These are our people, and we all belong!

If you were going to gift a friend the IDEAL WAKApalooza Weekend newbie starter kit, what would you give + why?

A refillable water bottle, sunscreen, tracking app for the team to download so you always know where they are, fanny pack, sunglasses, koozie, vitamins for recovery, and a free pass to the “Poor Choice Express”.

Guest tickets to WAKApalooza Weekend are still available. Join us in Las Vegas!
