Happy New Year!

WAKA wishes everyone a happy New Year! From crowning a new champion at Founders Cup® to raising money for deserving charities, 2009 was a year filled with fun, light-hearted competition and great kickball. Here is WAKA's Top 5 list of 2009.

#1 - Largest Founders Cup in the History of WAKA

2010 Founder's Cup Champions!

Last year the World Kickball Championship® Founders Cup® became the largest kickball tournament of its kind with 72 teams from across the country.

In the end, "The Others" from the DC Capital Division overtook "Best Coast Ballers" from CA Gold Rush Division 3-1 to snag the title of world kickball champions.

#2 - WAKA Players Give Back

Jonas Brothers' Charity Tournament

As much as we love playing kickball and celebrating at the division bar afterward, WAKA is also very dedicated to giving back to the communities where we live and play. As such, nearly $50,000 was donated to charities across the country - many benefiting children or others in need. WAKA even provided equipment and refs for the Jonas Brothers' charity tournament benefiting Change for the Children Foundation.

#3 - New Divisions Launched Across the Globe

New Divisions across the globe in 2009

WAKA is one of the fastest growing social sports - and 2009 was no different. Divisions were added across the country - from Manteca, CA to Pittsburgh, PA. WAKA even opened its first UK division in London. Even more divisions will be opened in 2010 to give even more people the opportunity to enjoy the social sport we all know and love. Visit kickball.com to check out new divisions forming now.

#4 - WAKA Connects People

Angela and Andy Proposal - WAKA Style Wedding Party - WAKA Style

It's no secret that WAKA is a great place to meet new people, but WAKA also is a great place to find a significant other. Last year alone, there have been more than 10 WAKA engagements and weddings. Congrats to all of the happy couples!

#5 - WAKA in the News

Last year many WAKA players saw themselves quoted in USA Today, starring in videos on ESPN.com and CNN, as well as featured in countless other news articles across the country. A few highlights include:

  • Founders Cup XII and 2008 World Kickball champions were featured on Page 2 on ESPN.com.
  • CNN ran a story about 'kickball making a comeback' - featuring WAKA Kickball in NYC.
  • USA Today Weekend wrote about WAKA in a story about juvenile games adults play.
