Captain Responsibilities

Being a captain has certain obligations to which each captain must agree. Failure to do so may result in any of the following actions at the discretion of your WAKA League Community Coordinator.

  • Removal from the captains position
  • Paper Forfeits in the standings or Automatic Game Forfeits
  • Game suspension

Prior to Season Friend group Moderators are able to create names for their groups. When upgraded to teams the group name becomes the team name. Captains can change the name of their team but make sure the name follows these guidelines:

  • Teams in the same REGION are not allowed to have the exact same name unless approved by WAKA (first come, first serve)
  • Kickball team names may not contain reference or implication to political agenda, issue, candidates, elected officials, religion, or overt alcohol, drug, or sexual reference.

The local league coordinator may decide against team names for any reason. WAKA retains the ultimate right to reject or accept any and all team names. Changes to team names can only be made prior to the season start unless there is a very unusual circumstance requiring a change afterwards.

  • You must attend a pre-season meeting (date & venue to be determined)
  • All captains are expected to read and understand the WAKA rulebook and communicate with players so that they understand the rules.

Player Management

  • All players on your roster are entitled to play an equal amount of time. You may not bench someone in favor of other players.
  • Your final roster is set by the league and may have as many as 24 players.
  • Encourage your team to go to the sponsor bar regularly after games and attend other social events throughout the season.
  • Remember, WAKA is more of a social organization than a competitive sports league.

Field/Beverage Policies

  • Each captain must be aware of all policies on their field, including beverage policy and communicate with players to make sure that these policies are being enforced.
  • Failure of players to abide by this rule could result in loss of the field for the league.
  • Anyone seen violating field policies will be immediately asked to leave the park.
  • Continued violations will result in permanent removal of the player from the league and / or team forfeits.
  • All trash leaves with you. Captains are encouraged to carry trash bags with them to make sure their team's areas are picked up.

Ref Responsibilities

  • Each team has ref responsibilities for an equal amount of games throughout the season.
  • Captains are ultimately responsible for making sure their team provides referees. Failure to provide refs will result in penalties for your team, including forfeits in the standings.
  • Please provide players that are knowledgeable with WAKA rules.
  • Players planning to ref should be on time and help to start the game at the designated playing time.

  • Last 5 innings or may be limited to a time limit. Games will be called on time issues regardless of score or innings. If called the game reverts back to last full inning of play.
  • At game start time, teams must meet the minimum number of players each as described in the WAKA rules. (8 players consisting of 4 girls / 4 guys).
  • Failure to meet the minimum requirements will result in a forfeit for your team.
  • As always, there are issues that may cause a delay in the start of the game which is understood. However, players arriving late is not one of them.

Conduct / Ref Interaction

  • You are responsible for the conduct of your team and players at all times while at the park.
  • Any harassment of other players, WAKA representatives, or referees must be dealt with immediately.
  • Only Captains and named co Captains can "discuss" a call with a referee.
  • Make sure you and your players know the rules.

Weekly Communication

  • Ensure that your team is aware of the schedule and regularly checks the website for updates.
  • Email your team a day or two prior to game day to remind players of the start time and on which field you are playing.
  • You are responsible for making sure that you have players available, on the field, and on time for games they are scheduled to referee.
  • Help the newer players with strategy & tips.
  • Captains need to prepare a lineup prior to game start time and provide a copy to the Captain of the team you are playing.
  • Try and get your players involved with the league, volunteer for committees, send in photos etc.
  • Encourage your team to go to the sponsor bar regularly after games and attend other social events throughout the season. Remember that WAKA is a social organization.

Field Setup

  • NM Zia Field Manager will set up the fields prior to games, however, Captains will be asked to gather bases, balls, and cones from your field after the late game.

Most importantly, Captains should be team leaders and encourage fun on and off the field. Failure to abide by the above listed can result in a captain being removed and replaced at WAKA's discretion. Have fun, and have a great season!
